Rockin' C Ranch 2008

Rockin' C this year was great!!! I was a 10:45 for the second time. If you don't know I've been to RCR for 8 summers and 2 new year's camps. I've been a camper 7 years and a 10:45 for 2 years. (It doesn't work? I was a camper and then a 10:45 two weeks later one year.)

I left for camp June 8th. When I got there I was so thrilled because my counselor was Brittany and I knew her from the previous year. Then Sarah arrived and I knew her from years past. Alex who I've known since the beginning of my RCR career was also there. Then Marissa arrived. I met her last year when I was a camper and she was a 10:45. Everyone was excited because everyone knew everyone and we all got along splendidly.

The 10:45 program has 5 camper spots. There were only 4 girls. The other girl Ali didn't arrive until Wednesday. We were glad to have her though! She had never been to RCR like the rest of us and she was really quiet at first. By the end of week 2 we had her talking though.

The 10:45 program is based on Mark 10:45 out of the Bible.
45"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

The program teaches us be servants so we can be leaders. In the morning we work in the kitchen, work with the day campers or help facilitate some activities around camp. After that we eat lunch, have quiet time, have recharge followed by canteen and an activity of our own. We also attend the devotionals with the other campers in the morning and in the evening.

I'm now going to summarize everything we did because I can't remember what week anything happened on.
  • They play this game out at camp called stampede. It's a fun game, as long as you are on the right side of it. I enjoyed it greatly and had fun scaring people.
  • I saw a bunch of campers I knew each week.
  • I have this thing for guns. I'm a pretty good shot. I hit 2 sets of 5 skeet with a 20 gauge and tore up a target when shooting a .22.
  • We also did the ropes course that is about 35ft. up. I'm proud to say that I completed the whole course, with much difficulty of course. (I'm scared to death of heights) It took about 35 minutes to complete what should take 15 at most! It's because I fell off the swing at one point then I freaked out and sat on the swing crying for 2 minutes before I went on.
  • I'm not strong so I wasn't able to reach the top of the climbing wall that I've been waiting to try for years.
  • I love the screamer and for the first time I actually screamed on it!
  • I went fishing quite often during the 3 weeks and caught a lot of fish. One took the line off of the bamboo pole I was using and you could watch my bobber swimming away. Another time I had a bass hook and the fish broke the hook in two! I didn't catch the two very large fish but I did manage to catch around 25 perch and 2 or so catfish but nothing impressive.
  • Now I'd like to take a moment to thank Ms. Rachel and Ms. Mo for all the wonderful food they cooked. (Other people helped but they deserve the credit) It was good "camp food".
  • The weekends were fun. Andrew M. was having difficulty starting the van and was advised to "talk nice to it" the van went click click. Since that didn't help he slapped the dash board and called the van a "stupid skank!" To which the van responded vvrrrooommm! That was the first weekend. By the second weekend Mr. Henry had it fixed and the trip was less exciting.
  • On the second Friday Brittany and Ms. Rachel had a surprise for us! We went to Ms. Rachel's house where we swam, enjoyed nachos and played WII. It was a fun time and we taught Ali how to bowl. Then she was a natural.
  • Wednesday of week 3 we went camping. Not the nice little place behind the bath house. Way out in Mr. Henry's woods! Mr. Henry invited us over to feed fish that evening. That was fun because they have a ton of huge catfish! Like giant catfish! Ms. Tina offered us snow cones so we went inside and enjoyed home made snow cones. Then our hosts wanted to watch the end of Farmer Takes A Wife. By this time a storm has moved in. Ms. Tina doesn't mind rain but since there was lightning she wouldn't let us leave. She said we could watch TV so we decided to put in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes. Do you know the children's story "If You Give A Mouse A Cookie"? If you put in a movie you'll need to make at least 5 bags of popcorn. If you eat popcorn you're sure to be thirsty and you'll need some sweet tea. Well Ms. Tina is a wonderful woman and I love her to death but she will feed you and feed you and feed you until you throw up. And after you throw up she'll feed you more. She made us snicker doodles and offered us cheese sticks as well. After the storm subsided and the movie ended we cleaned up our stuff said thank you and departed for our campsite that was already set up. When we returned we wanted to make our s*mores but in order to make s*mores you need a fire. It had just rained. If you've ever tried to make a fire with wet wood you know it's not easy. After using many matches unsuccessfully Brittany let me try. I remembered seeing some old hay a few yards away so we took the top part off and used the dry hay underneath to help start the fire and keep it burning until it was sustained by the bigger logs. It was a rather smoky business but it got the job done. We ate a few s*mores and marshmallows relieved ourselves and put out the fire. We then went to bed in our 3 person tent. Yes 6 people slept in a tiny tent. We laid there going on and on about things and fell asleep 45 minutes later. It was awkward at first but then no one really cared. I didn't sleep well but come 8am we all got up and packed up our supplies. We were late that morning but Ms. Rachel let us off the hook.
  • The wranglers let out all the horses one Thursday after they returned from Holly Tree and we didn't get to ride. I bargained with the head wrangler Loren, great guy, and in exchange he let our group participate in 3 rodeos. We did team pinning each week and it was fun!

Now the most important thing about my 3 weeks at camp was that on June 27th Mr. Matt baptized me in the lake. That night I rededicated my life to Christ!

That's my story of Rockin' C '08!!
